It’s a Geometric World, 1st grade project (Day 12) by Ms. Trowbridge’s First Graders

“Today we worked on fractions.”  (Christopher)  To start we reviewed equal shares and the meaning of halves, fourths, and eighths.  “We made a fraction chart.”  (Giovanny) “People took turns to put shapes that had parts colored in the right spot.”  (Ximena) For example, “if one part was colored in out of eight, it went next to the 1/8.”  (Jay)
During math, we continued working with equal share activities.  “I cut out shapes and folded them into parts.”  (Pedro)  “In my center, I did 4 circles and folded them into parts.  We folded the circles into eighths, fourths, halves, and a whole.”  (Yaritza)  “I wrote sentences about parts of shapes like, equal, unequal, and fourths.”  (Ximena)

This afternoon we began work on our leprechaun traps.  “First, we got a paper and shared our ideas about what we wanted our leprechaun trap to be like with our group.”  (Paola)  “We drew a picture of our trap and everyone got a chance to draw and work on it.”  (Christian) “We choose 3-D shapes to build our traps like a rectangular prism.”  (Mozes)  “We practiced building the trap.”  (Jimena)  “Tomorrow we’re going to make our leprechaun trap.”  (Chris B.)
