Bat Expert Groups: Going Batty with Ms. Diep’s First Graders

This week we started working on our Bat Books.  Students had the opportunity to choose which bat they wanted to write about.

Students worked together in their expert groups to come up with complete sentences using the notes we took on the chart.

“The Bumblebee Bat is reddish brown.” – Cindy

“The Mexican Free Tailed Bat can live up to 18 years.” – Andres

“The Little Red Tailed Flying Fox has a 3 feet wingspan!” – Eleang

“The Greater Spear Nosed bat has a 4 inch body.” – King

  1. I love how you gave your students a choice in which bat they wanted to write about? Did you come up with a list of the types of bats first, or did they just tell you what type they wanted to write about?

    1. Students were able to pick one of the four bats we studied a few weeks ago as a whole class. We reviewed all of the information on our chart for each bat and they used Post It notes to mark their favorite one.
